Weekly Arhar (Tur) Report

Current Market Developments:

  • Arhar (Tur) prices in most of the spot markets have traded firm tracking lower acreage and fear of crop damage in Maharashtra due to heavy rains.

  • Prices of Tur in Latur have increased by 4 percent over last fortnight. Similarly, at Gulbarga, Jabalpur and Rajkot also saw an increase of 1.25 percent, 1.52 percent and 0.36 percent respectively.
  • As per market sources, In Maharashtra around 10.7 lakh hectares of land mainly in Vidarbha and Marathwada region has been affected and as per initial reports there could be around 15 to 20 percent crop loss in these areas.
  • The current kharif acreage under Tur has declined in the country by 13.51 percent at 36.11 lakh hectares as compared to 41.75 lakh hectares same period last year. The major Tur growing states Karnataka and Maharashtra has reported a decline in acreage by 10 percent and 11 percent respectively. So, far in Maharashtra around 11.12 lakh hectare of area is under Tur as compared to 12.51 lakh hectares sown last year same period. Similarly, Karnataka reported lower Tur acreage of around 11.50 lakh hectares as against 12.73 lakh hectares last year.
  • The regular imports have been undertaken which has resulted in higher availability in domestic markets. In Tanzania, Gajjar variety Tur is quoted at $690 per ton on CNF Nhava Sheva for Aug-Sept shipment, Bariyadi Tur at $770 per ton on CNF Nhava Sheva for Aug shipment, Malawi Red Tur at $610 per ton on CNF Nhava Sheva for Aug shipment and Sudan Tur at $910 per ton on CNF Nhava Sheva. At Burma, Tur Lemon varieties quoted at $875-$890 per ton on CNF basis for Chennai.
