Value Chain of Maize
Production trend and Stock position:
- As per the Ministry of Agriculture first advance estimate released on September 22, 2020, Maize Kharif production for 2020-21 was 19.88 million metric tonnes (Mn MT) compared to previous year which was 19.63 Mn MT, up by 1.27 percent.
- According to Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) India’s Exports of Maize in 2020-21 (April – September) stood at 9.22 lakh metric tonne (LMT) and valued at ₹ 1,376.83 crores whereas India’s Import of Maize for the same period stood at 16,379.95 MT valued at ₹ 47.61 crores.
- According to Ministry of Agriculture, the sowing acreage of Maize as on November 27, 2020 was 4.76 lakh hectares (lh) down by 15.30 percent compared to 5.62 lh during the corresponding period.

Monsoon Update
For the country as a whole, Seasonal cumulative rainfall during this year’s southwest monsoon season upto November 25, 2020 was below Long Period Average (LPA) by 5 percent. Details of the rainfall distribution over the four broad geographical regions of India are given below:
Market commentary: Price outlook
- The Government had increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Maize by 5.11 percent to ₹ 1,850 per quintal for marketing year (MY) 2020-21 compared to ₹ 1,760 in 2019-20.
- Prices of Maize in the physical markets are likely to trade steady to slightly firm in the immediate / short term as currently prices across India have been trading below MSP.
- Due to recent media reports of Fall Armyworm attacks in states of Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and increase of import demand from Vietnamese feed makers which could be some of the factors for a steady rise in Maize prices.
