Climate change has impacted the globe and is continuing to do so! The G20 Summit has also called for Eliminating Hunger as a top priority. The leaders are committed to accelerating innovations and investments in increasing agricultural productivity and reducing food loss and waste to build more sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture and food systems.
Climate change is a significant concern for India and the whole world. Due to climate change, India is predicted to yield less between 4.5 and 9%. Since agriculture makes up over 16% of India’s GDP, a negative impact of 4.5 to 9% on agri production implies a cost of climate change of roughly up to 1.5% of GDP per year. Hence, the government of India has given high priority to research and development to withstand climate change in the agriculture sector.
In response to defeating climate change, India is focused towards agricultural sustainability through the National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA).
NICRA is a network project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) launched in February 2011. The initiative recognises the urgent need to safeguard agricultural livelihoods and ensure food security amidst shifting climatic patterns. NICRA has organised over 100 training programs nationwide, supporting 50,000 farmers, to raise awareness of climate change and variability.
- By promoting the cultivation of climate-resilient crop varieties using innovative technologies, NICRA aims to mitigate yield losses and ensure stable agricultural production despite climatic uncertainties.
- NICRA strongly emphasises enhancing water management practices like efficient irrigation techniques, rainwater harvesting, and watershed management initiatives, which seek to optimise water usage and build resilience against droughts and water scarcity.
- It recognises the pivotal role of farmers in driving agricultural resilience. To this end, it focuses on providing the knowledge and skills to farmers to adapt to changing climatic conditions.
- Through capacity-building programs, training workshops, and extension services, NICRA equips farmers with the necessary tools and information to make informed decisions and implement climate-smart agricultural practices in their fields.
agribazaar, with its technology, is pivotal in supporting the NICRA initiative. By leveraging its digital marketplace, agribazaar facilitates access to nationwide climate-resilient seeds, inputs, and technologies for farmers. Through partnerships with research institutions and agricultural experts, the platform ensures that farmers have access to cutting-edge solutions that enhance their resilience to climate change, thereby bolstering the objectives of NICRA.
By utilising innovation, empowering farmers, and fostering collaboration across sectors, NICRA is paving the way for a sustainable and resilient future for Indian agriculture in the face of climate change.
