Current Market Developments:

  • As depicted in the adjacent price chart, Tur prices in most of the domestic markets continue to remain strong tracking steady buying demand from traders and processors.
  • In the last couple of weeks steady arrivals have been noted in the markets of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.
  • To minimize the imports, the government has set a target to be self-reliant in the pulses sector by 2027 and to deal with it Government plans to procure 100 percent Tur from farmers at Minimum Support Price (MSP) or Market prices whichever is higher.
  • Recently, the government has launched a new portal that will enable the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) to purchase Tur directly from registered farmers.
  • As per market sources, the Telangana government has decided to purchase around 50 thousand tonnes of Tur from farmers at prevailing market price through Markfed. The MSP of Tur is Rs 7,000 per quintal whereas the current prevailing market prices are in the range of Rs 8,500 to Rs 9,800 per quintal depending on the quality and quantity. The Tur acreage in Telangana during the current season was 4.74 lakh hectares and the production expectation is of around 2.37 lakh tonnes.
  • On the import front, a significant increase has resulted in sufficient supplies in domestic markets. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the imports increased significantly by 65 percent at 4,39,999.01 tonnes during the April-October 2023 period as compared to 2,66,438.01 tonnes in April-October 2022 period. In the month of October 2023 imports increase by 51 percent at 1,65,917.45 tonnes as compared to 1,09,783.68 tonnes in the same month last year.
  • The government in its First Kharif season crop production estimates 2023-24 has estimated Arhar (TUR) production at 34.21 lakh tonnes. However, trade sources are estimating the 2023-24 crop production to be around 31 to 32 lakh tonnes.
